Acclimation Period

Accelerated cell turnover is a positive phenomenon, yet it sometimes feels uncomfortable. When your skin appears dry and flakes like a freshly baked croissant, there's no need to panic. While flaking is a natural part of the process, we would like to guide you through managing flaking, allowing you to minimize discomfort and embrace a radiant complexion.

Why is my skin flaking?

The cell turnover cycle typically spans thirty days. Dermatological products with advanced formulations expedite this turnover, causing dead cells to surface faster than they naturally shed. Simultaneously, active ingredients stimulate the regeneration of healthy new cells, adding pressure for dry surface cells to peel away. Incorporating retinoids, AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid, etc.) BHAs (salicylic acid), will cause your skin to flake.

Active ingredients can induce redness, dryness, and flaking, potentially mistaken for a reaction. However, this is part of the accelerated cell turnover. If your skin becomes inflamed, raw, or painful, it's a signal to pause. In such cases, restrict your routine to a gentle cleanser and a soothing moisturizer until your skin heals. Gradually resume every other day until acclimated before moving to daily use.

Why don’t all skin care products cause flaking?

Not all skincare products prompt rapid cell turnover, despite claims. Corrective skincare products have pharmaceutical-grade concentrations of active ingredients, which are responsible for the amazing results the products provide.

How long will the flaking last?

When introducing a new product, the dry, flaky phase lasts 30 to 45 days, depending on your skin's condition. Regular exfoliation shortens this phase, while those new to active skincare may experience a longer acclimation period. This transitional phase, marked by flaking and dryness, peaks in the initial weeks, gradually diminishing as your skin adjusts. Once acclimated, the flaking ceases, but the benefits persist.

What can I do to minimize flaking?

Exfoliation proves effective in reducing acclimation signs. Utilize a recommended scrub from our clinic. Physical exfoliation aids in clearing cellular debris brought to the surface, promoting a smoother transition for your skin.

Continue to use your products, the acclimation period will be over soon.
